My Story

I'm Asha Altmann, an artist raised in Margaret River. I use a range of watercolour, gouache, acrylic and anything I can get my hands on. I create art so people can have a reminder to be grateful and stay connected to the earth with a curious respect. On a larger scale this connects them to humanity and themselves.

Struggling with dyslexia as a child and into adulthood I found I was able to communicate the power of nature through my art rather than the spoken or written word. It opened a door for me to express my true present self.

I have been in love with art for as long as I can remember, in 2017 I enrolled in a Visual Arts Certificate at TAFE. Learning under lecturers such as Kay Gibson and Dea Haddow I gained a wealth of knowledge. l studied under these amazing mentors for a year and a half, accomplishing Certificate 3 and 4 in Visual Arts receiving the Highest Achievement Award and Certificate of Excellence for both certificates.

After this amazing experience I decided it was time to explore the beautiful coastline of Western Australia. Through a series of road trips, I discovered some of the most inspiring and untouched landscapes and animals. This had a major impact on my artist style and helped create a visual journal of my experiences and the birth of AshaLoo.

I love to play with the technique ‘Én Plain Air’ while on the road in my van. The freedom of slowly traveling up and down the coast following the sun capturing landscapes allows me to search for different perspectives. Watercolour is my medium of choice. I lean into the free-flowing form it naturally creates, pairing detailed patterns found in nature while being completely immersed in it.

After long road trips, I often come home more inspired by the landscapes I grew up in. After being away for so long I always see Margaret River with fresh new eyes, picking up on things I once looked past. The balance of travel and grounding in your roots is a concept I have become infatuated with. The crystal blue waters of the Ningaloo Reef paired with harsh red dust desert plains sets such a stunning contrast to my southern home with its towering, gigantic Karri trees and rolling green hills.

I have a heart attachment to every artwork I create. I look at my art as an expression of experience. The archive of my adventures is a snap shot in time of nature through my eyes. Everyone has their own story and I hope my journey connects with yours.
