I dreamt of this painting before it was created- the angelic connection between a woman and the ocean. Living in Exmouth, mantra have made a magical reputation for themselves. If you ever get the chance to swim with one, two, or three, you’ll understand the magic.
Up until the end of this 2023 season, I had never swam with one. I had always heard of how magical it was to watch them eat socially, exhibiting behaviours, such as swimming in circles while summersaulting. One afternoon while surfing a couple of left down from Dunes, a manta launched itself out of the ocean. It flew, flapping its wings, then diving deep into the ocean. I had never seen anything like it. At that moment, I knew I had to act and paint a scene capturing their magic.
This circular flow of life painting I had been dreaming about, finally clicked. I became obsessed with mantras, studying their patterns, the flow of their wings, and how they would come together to create a beautiful orchestra of movement- all in one.
Finally, I finished the painting and so many people connected with their magic. After studying their movements so closely, all I wanted was to experience their flow. It wasn’t until one amazing afternoon when the golf had glass off, and three flips of a coin, we heard word of a manta, parallel to a water tank on shore. A beautiful friend, and I jumped off the boat to find a gigantic manta. It was magical.
